Derek St. Holmes
In
1974, hard-rocker Ted Nugent first saw Derek’s band Scott during an opening slot at Michigan’s
Lincoln Park Theater. After several months, Nugent's road manager tracked
down and phoned St. Holmes about auditioning for Nugent's band, then
called Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes. The Amboy Dukes had already recorded
several albums with growing popularity, but after the lead singer left,
Nugent needed a new front man to give his band the sound that would catapult
him into stardom. St. Holmes was hired and the band of Ted Nugent with
Derek St. Holmes, Rob Grange and Vic Mastriani, later changed to be known
as The Ted Nugent Band was launched and started immediately on an extensive
U.S. tour. Traveling and performing nearly 300 days a year, they played
with other popular bands, such as Aerosmith, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Seger,
Van Halen and Black Sabbath.
Jimi
Jamison
The
famed rock vocalist is best known as the lead singer for the band Survivor
from 1984 to 1989. Jamison would later reunite with Survivor for a tour
in 2000, and for one album in 2006. He also sang for the bands Target
and Cobra and provided background vocals for other bands including ZZ
Top. Among his best known performances are "Burning Heart",
from the Rocky IV movie
with Sylvester Stallone, which hit #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, "High
On You" (#8 US), and "The Search Is Over" (#4 US). Jamison
also co-wrote and sang "I'm Always Here", the theme from
the hit TV show Baywatch. In 2005, Jamison was featured in
the Emmy-nominated Starbucks commercial, which was a parody of Survivor's "Eye
of the Tiger."
Kevin
Chalfant
Kevin Chalfant joined
the band 707 on Boardwalk Records as lead vocalist in 1981. The Megaforce album
(and subsequent movie soundtrack single) screamed up the Billboard charts
and landed the group a Top 20 single that threw the band into a North
American tour. Chalfant and 707 toured with all of the top touring acts
including REO Speedwagon, Rainbow, Scorpions, Ted Nugent, Loverboy and
many others as a part of the famous “Super Jams of 1982.” Chalfant
would later enjoy Top 10 success at the dawn of the 1990s with one
of the last successful bands of the AOR era, The Storm. After a hiatus
from music in the mid-90s, he has remained active in solo and group
projects, and has stepped in as temporary lead vocalist for Journey
(1994) and The Alan Parsons Live Project (2003). Chalfant has been
an added attraction to the Gregg Rolie live show in recent years, as
well as a valued participant of Jim Peterik’s World Stage.
Fran
Cosmo
This
unmistakable vocalist was first featured on Boston guitarist Barry
Goudreau's self titled solo album in 1980, a prelude to the formation
of Orion the Hunter in 1983. Orion the Hunter released an album in
1984 on Columbia Records, which yielded a hit single "So You Ran," featuring
the sky-high vocals which prompted Cosmo's entrance to Boston in 1991.
In 1994, Cosmo was featured as the sole lead vocalist on the multi-platinum
Boston disc Walk
On, which reached #7 on Billboard and produced three hit singles
and including "I Need Your Love," which climbed to #4 Mainstream
Rock Chart, in spite of the growing popularity of the Seattle-driven
grunge movement. Upon Delp's return to Boston, the two shared vocals
in concert, where Delp said Cosmo covered "the really tough high
parts." In 1997, Cosmo was again featured on Boston's Greatest
Hits album, and took an even larger role in the 2002 album Corporate
America, with the addition of co-production to his credits as
vocalist. Cosmo performed in Boston tours from 1994 to 2004.
Joe
Lynn Turner
Outside
of solo contexts, the singer is best known for fronting hard rock bands
Rainbow (1980-1984) and Deep Purple (1989-1992). Outside of those bands,
he’s also worked
as a songwriter and has also worked with famous guitarists Yngwie Malmsteen
and Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple. He sang for Malmsteen on his
greatly successful album Odyssey (1988). The brief tour that
followed the release of the album featured a concert in Leningrad,
which was recorded and then released as Trial By Fire (1989).
In 1989 he left the band to join up his ex-bandmates Ritchie Blackmore
and Roger Glover in their band Deep Purple, recording the recently
re-issued album Slaves & Masters. Turner continues to
produce critically acclaimed CDs to this day and is often regarded
as one of the best rock singers in history.
